John Oliver wins Emmys and Twitter with #DCPublicSchools

John Oliver wins Emmys and Twitter with #DCPublicSchools”

By praising the U.S. education system and instructing the Emmys audience to trend #DCPublicSchools on Twitter, because "I think it'd be great if it started trending on Twitter tonight for no reason whatsoever".

When John Oliver utters a hashtag, it's bound to trend.

During the Emmys on Sunday night, Chapelle - an Emmy victor for guest-hosting SNL this year - joked that he missed rehearsals and was just going to read the teleprompter without prior preparation.

"Shoutout to D.C. public schools", Chappelle added before going back to the teleprompter.

The Globe's top picks for what to see and do each weekend, in Boston and beyond.

The subject of D.C. public schools began after Dave Chappelle and Melissa McCarthy seemed to have gone off-script presenting an award earlier in the telecast.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, hosted by the 40-year-old Oliver, snagged the Emmy for outstanding variety talk series at Sunday's star-studded ceremony. "So, if you're tweeting about the Emmys at home, please use the hashtag D.C. Public Schools", Oliver said.

And that's exactly what people did.

"I'd like to thank Oprah because she's sitting right there and it seems inappropriate not to", he said to laughter.
