'KPMG's conduct an attempt to portray Sars as incompetent, corrupt'

'KPMG's conduct an attempt to portray Sars as incompetent, corrupt'”

KPMG has been embroiled in controversy since it announced that it was withdrawing its finding and recommendations on the SA Revenue Services' "rogue unit" report.

"SARS sees KPMG's conduct as nothing else but a dismal attempt to portray SARS, its leadership, and in particular (the) SARS Commissioner as incompetent, corrupt, inefficient and involved in a witch-hunt", Moyane said.

But Moyane defended the report and said KPMG had no right to make information in the report public or to withdraw parts of the document without consulting SARS.

The withdrawal saw KPMG apologise to former finance minister Pravin Gordhan‚ who it said had had knowledge of the SARS high risk investigation unit.

"KPMG's unexplained withdrawal of a SARS report and its work in the integrated financial management system (IFMS) project, in which it was paid nearly R5 million before delivering on the contract raise questions about its integrity", said Scopa chairperson Themba Godi.

"This abhorrent, unethical and unprofessional conduct by KPMG has left Sars with no option but to consider the following legal route: instituting legal proceedings against KPMG for the reputational damage to Sars".

In the last few minutes, the African National Congress has reacted to Monday's announcement.

It says it wants KPMG to account for what appears to be politically motivated and unethical conduct.
