Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi team up on self-driving and electric cars

Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi team up on self-driving and electric cars”

More platform-sharing, powertrain-sharing and across-the-board technology can be expected from Renault, Mitsubishi and Nissan over the next five years.

A major component of the new plans is to boost the use of common platforms. By 2022, the companies hope to produce nine million cars annually off four common platforms.

As you might suspect, it'll be largely one-way borrowing: Mitsubishi will have access to the Common Module Family (CMF) from Renault Nissan and its associated engines, by 2020.

Together with the 12 electric vehicles and their technology, 40 vehicles in the alliance's current line up will be introduced with autonomous driving technology in various levels by 2022.

More importantly, the Alliance - along with virtually every other manufacturer that is implicated into the EV realm - is promising impressive performance from the next generation of battery technology, with ranges of 600 km (373 miles) on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) and 30 percent lower costs.

Dubbed Alliance 2022, it spells out how the disparate companies will cooperate more closely on future product and behind-the-scenes collaboration. These 22 engines will account of 75 per cent of the alliance's output.

The automakers plan to release their first fully autonomous vehicle, requiring no human driver at all, in about five years.

A more advanced highway system only needing occasional driver intervention will also be available in 2020, with a fully autonomous driver-free vehicle pencilled in for 2022. By the end of our strategic plan Alliance 2022, we aim to double our annual synergies to €10 billion. Combined revenues are estimated at $240 billion by that year. To save costs, the alliance will double the synergies by the partial contribution from Mitsubishi Motors, specifically through deeper localization, joint plant utilization, common vehicle platforms, and an expanded presence in mature and emerging markets.

In launching the new six-year plan, Carlos Ghosn, head of the alliance, said: "The Alliance has grown and performed with two members since 1999".

It said it is seeking to be a "key operator" of driverless ride-hailing services and to provide autonomous vehicles for public transit and car-sharing.
