U2 cancel St Louis gig over safety concerns amid protests”

Ed Sheeran has cancelled a sold-out gig in the USA following protests over the killing of a black man in St Louis. Hundreds of people marched on Friday, September 15.

But a small group of protesters refused to go. After dark "the unruly crowd became a mob", according to police, and protesters threw bricks, rocks and projectiles as officers tried to disperse crowds. The demonstrators retreated down a street, breaking windows and throwing objects at police. Witnesses claimed the woman was handcuffed and arrested. What started out peacefully has since turned violent with acts of vandalism. A group also demonstrated at Chesterfield Mall in the suburbs and at a regional food festival.

And Briton Sheeran announced he was pulling the plug on his show, set for a different St Louis venue Sunday, amid the protests.

Susanna Prins, a 27-year-old from University City, was carrying a sign that read "white silence is violence".

Stockley had fired five shots at Smith, following a high speed police chase after he believed he witnessed the man engaging in a drug deal.

Justice Department spokeswoman Lauren Ehrsam says the department previously looked at the case in 2012 and decided not to prosecute, and again in 2016 after charges were filed in St. Louis.

Prosecutors brought first-degree murder charges in 2016, alleging that Stockley's comments to his partner showed premeditation and alleging he planted a gun in Smith's auto after the shooting.

The officers later helped her up and took her away. Police said that 10 businesses were damaged.

St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson and Interim Police Chief Lawrence M. O'Toole answered questions about the demonstrations during a news conference. She said not everyone who shows up at protests share the same goals as organizers or the majority of protesters.

Though some fans expressed disappointment on the band's social media accounts, many others were supportive.

Stockley, 36, shot Smith, 24, five times December 20, 2011, after a auto chase that followed a suspected drug deal.

Stockley claimed he saw Smith holding a gun but prosecutors said the officer planted a gun in Smith's vehicle after the shooting. The officer's DNA was on the weapon but Smith's wasn't. Dashcam video from Stockley's cruiser recorded him saying he was "going to kill this (expletive)".
