Young girl dies from flu in Melbourne's east

Young girl dies from flu in Melbourne's east”

Australia's deadly flu season has claimed the life of an eight-year-old girl and people have been warned not to dismiss symptoms as "simply a cold". This figure is made even more frightening when compared to Health Department figures show that 75,818 cases of the flu were recorded for the same time a year ago.

The Department of Education has been contacted.

Earlier this month eight people died from a flu outbreak at an aged care facility at St John's Retirement Village in Wangaratta in Victoria's north-east.

She told 3AW's Neil Mitchell the death of the young girl was "one of the other very sad cases that we've seen this flu season".

The state's hospitals are under severe stress as they deal with a rise in the number of flu cases.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy today confirmed the little girl died from the flu at the Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully on Friday, following the flu death of young dad Ben Ihlow on Father's Day.

Minister Hennessy said that Victorian health services do not know if the flu season has reached its peak, and it's not too late for people to get vaccinated against it.

"What it does show us is that we have a horror flu season on our hands".

Elective surgeries have been cancelled at some hospitals, cubicles have been taken over in emergency departments and private hospitals have been used by public patients.
