Auckland fuel crisis: More flights cancelled, tankers brought in”

Refining New Zealand, which owns the Marsden Point fuel refinery, has advised Auckland Airport that it is working on repairing a section of its damaged fuel pipeline which connects the refinery in Marsden Point to Wiri Oil Services Limited in Auckland, which in turns supplies airlines with aviation fuel at the airport.

Malaysia Airlines in a statement said it has not cancelled any flight due to fuel rationing in Auckland between Sept 17 and 24.

Up to 80,000 litres of jet fuel - or about two tanker loads - spilled from the pipeline at Ruakaka, about 130km north of Auckland.

The fuel shortage resulted in the cancellation of approximately 27 domestic and global flights over the weekend, said Auckland Airport.

Of them, 22 were domestic flights and six were worldwide, and this compared with the 465 services a day that ran from the airport, it said.

In the meantime, New Zealand's army is now helping fix the ruptured fuel pipeline.

Z Energy said good stocks of 95 octane fuel into Auckland were continuing to be trucked and there should be no concern for Z's 95 octane customers.

"We're confident that there is sufficient fuel in the Auckland market from both a petrol and diesel perspective", Mr McNaught said.

"But the problem for National is it puts the focus on the Government's record, puts the focus on infrastructure, security of crucial supply lines and our airport, and away from what it wants to be talking about".

A separate ship would take jet fuel from Marsden Point to Lyttelton and Dunedin so planes could refuel outside of Auckland.
