AWS moves to per-second billing for EC2 and EBS

AWS moves to per-second billing for EC2 and EBS”

With the average person reading about 200 words per minute, if The Register ran on a general goal M4 large EC2 instance, which cost US$0.05/hour on the Spot market, here at the 79-word mark of this story you'd have cost us about $0.00028.

Amazon's big data processing and analysis offering Elastic MapReduce (EMR) and its Batch service will also see per-second pricing applied.

Usage of Linux instances that are launched in On-Demand, Reserved, and Spot form will be billed in one-second increments from 2 October. The public cloud leader now offers per-hour metering, while the next two trailing competitors, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure, have for several years charged by the minute. Also, it's only for Linux virtual machines.

Amazon believes the new pricing model will be cheaper for many customer workloads.

Per-second billing will primarily reduce costs for customers running large, complex environments.

But Barr added that the change to per-second billion could "inspire" customers to "innovate and to think about your compute-bound problems in new ways". "How can you use it to improve your support for continuous integration?"

Servers-by-the-second kicks on on October 2nd, 2017, for all current or new Linux instancesInstances running Microsoft Windows or Linux distributions that have a separate hourly charge don't get to play.

"One of the many advantages of cloud computing is the elastic nature of provisioning or deprovisioning resources as you need them", he explained.

Google surged ahead in 2013 when it introduced the per-minute structure, a move that marked a major step forwards, with AWS still working on the per-hour charging format.

Jeff Barr, chief evangelist, AWS, said in a blog post on the announcement: "While this will result in a price reduction for many workloads (and you know we love price reductions), I don't think that's the most important aspect of this change".

"At the end of the day it is great for customers, who pay more transparently to real usage, and for the vendors, who can reallocate resources faster", said Holger Mueller, vice president and principal analyst at Constellation Research.
