Canadians impacted by Equifax data breach

Canadians impacted by Equifax data breach”

The company said September 19 the investigation is ongoing and it appears that the breached data may have included names, addresses, social insurance numbers and in some cases credit card numbers.

Equifax, said on Monday that it would give this week more details to Canadians on the impact of the major data breach it suffered this summer, without specifying how many people were affected by the cyber attack north of the border.

"We understand it has also been frustrating that Equifax Canada has been unable to provide clarity on who was impacted until the investigation is complete".

A Toronto cybersecurity and privacy lawyer says that if the credit monitoring company is found to have failed to do enough to protect consumers' data, the Federal Trade Commission in the US can issue hefty fines.

On Sept. 7, Equifax announced that it suffered a data breach that may have compromised the personal information of 143 million Americans and an undisclosed number of Canadian and United Kingdom residents.

The office of the privacy commissioner of Canada said Friday that Equifax had committed to contact, in writing, to the Canadians whose personal information could have been stolen, and to offer them services for free credit monitoring.

The credit data company based in Atlanta told The Canadian Press that this update will include how Equifax intends to notify any potentially impacted individuals.

The company is also telling Canadian consumers to be vigilant in reviewing their account statements and credit reports.

Equifax discovered the unauthorized access on July 29 of this year and acted immediately to stop the intrusion, it said.

Earlier this week, Equifax put the blame for the breach on a web server vulnerability in its Apache Struts open-source software.
