Death toll in Grenfell Tower blaze may be lower than 80”

POLICE INVESTIGATING the Grenfell Tower fire say they may press individual manslaughter charges which could see those responsible for the disaster jailed, The Independent reports.

The June 14 blaze began in a refrigerator in an apartment at Grenfell Tower before racing through the 24-story building.

Police said they believed the death toll from the 14 June blaze may fall slightly from the current estimate of about 80. The smallest remains found have been children's teeth.

"It is a really harrowing scene", said Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack, who is leading search and recovery operations.

Announcing an update to the investigation into the fire at the west London tower block, Scotland Yard said they are also looking into four possible thefts from inside the flats, including one involving a "substantial" amount of money, and a further eight cases of people who allegedly fraudulently claimed money after the blaze.

The building is unstable and each room has to be individually secured with steel bars to make it safe for investigators. "We are seeing a litany of failures for Grenfell survivors".

She said security measures around the tower have since been "significantly" increased, including scaffolding with alarms and extra lighting.

Police are also investigating eight cases of suspected fraud by people who pretended to have been affected by the fire in various ways in order to claim money that the government made available for survivors and bereaved relatives.

On Wednesday June 14, a massive fire erupted at London's Grenfell Tower.

'Although police are considering the charges, it will be up to the Crown Prosecution Service to decide if those charges will be taken further to prosecution, which could take longer'.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Bonner said the investigation would deal with "whatever offences come to light".

"The kind of stuff I would envisage we may come across would involve offenses perhaps of fraud, misconduct offenses, health-and-safety breaches, breaches of fire-safety regulations and, of course, offenses of manslaughter, whether that be on a corporate or an individual level", he said. Charges could be brought against individuals or organisations.

Grenfell Tower, which was completed in 1974, was owned by the borough of Kensington and Chelsea and managed by an organisation that ran social housing on the borough's behalf.

He said the 80 figure "may come down a little bit" due to the recoveries made from the tower, the number of identifications made and video evidence from the night.
