Sean Spicer Regrets His First Move As White House Press Secretary

Then a photo of Corden kissing Spicer popped up on the screen behind him.

One of Sean Spicer's most high-profile sparring partners in the White House briefing room thinks his newly-expressed remorse over the Inauguration crowd size kerfuffle falls well short. "Melissa McCarthy, everybody, give it up". The real Spicer got a few jokes in.

"This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period!"

A person familiar with the planning of the Emmy program said Monday that Colbert and his staff regarded Spicer's appearance as both a joke at the expense of Trump and a way to poke fun at Colbert, too. Nudge nudge. Get it?

"You are alienating at least 63 million Americans who supported this president last time", she said.

"I can't normalize a man who lied for months..." read another.

Many observers viewed Spicer's inclusion in the ceremony as well as his recent selection for a visiting Harvard fellowship as institutions assisting the former administration official to rehabilitate himself in the public eye. Former SNL player and actress Jenny Slate tweeted that she was "so grossed out" by the decision. Such subterfuge meant that Spicer would have to travel to Los Angeles in disguise. "What the hell is wrong with you all?!" Indeed, when Kimmel told Colbert "a certain part of me felt sorry for" Spicer, Colbert seemed surprised. Somehow the Emmy writers and producers thought having Spicer come out and reprise his role as a liar would be hilarious. Spicer wouldn't say, but a friend hinted to the Times that it involved facial hair.

He continued, "I'm kidding, of course". Again, though the night was filled anti-Trump sentiment, inspiring speeches about political activism, and supposedly subversive post-Trump television, Spicer was still invited onto that very same stage where that all took place. Who wouldn't, if their job entailed kissing Sean Spicer at an Emmys afterparty and then Sean Spicer-ing their way out of disaster in the morning? Posing for pics, drinking beer, soaking up all attention after onstage appearance.
