Some Kohl's stores will let Amazon customers return stuff there for free

Some Kohl's stores will let Amazon customers return stuff there for free”

There will be no charge for returning items to Kohl's "regardless of return reason", per a press release; Kohl's workers will package the items up and ship them to Amazon.

Starting in October, Kohl's (KSS) will start processing Amazon (AMZN) returns for free at 82 stores in Los Angeles and in Chicago, said the department store.

Some retailers though are following the lead of Kohl's to work more closely with Amazon. Customers can also now return certain Amazon items to Whole Foods stores following Amazon's acquisition of the grocery chain, CNBC reports.

The move comes as Kohl's in early September announced it was opening Amazon smart home experience shops inside 10 stores in the Chicago and Los Angeles markets in October. "This is a great example of how Kohl's and Amazon are leveraging each other's strengths - the power of Kohl's store portfolio and omnichannel capabilities combined with the power of Amazon's reach and loyal customer base". A representative with Kohl's said Tuesday a specific store list would be shared closer to the launch date.

If you zoom out a bit, this Kohl's-Amazon emerging partnership sounds like the two retailers are dating.

Naturally, this new partnership will fuel further speculation about a possible buyout of Kohl's by Amazon, which some analysts have already posited theories about. With constant fulfillment and reverse logistics demands, online retailers are finding it necessary to have a presence in the physical world as well. Kohl's has a large store network and is using those assets to broaden its digital ambitions and fulfill orders. Amazon could also buy a retailer like JC Penney, which has a market cap of $1.29 billion, but isn't run almost as well as Kohl's.
