Uber apologises after making sexist correlation between women and the kitchen

Uber apologises after making sexist correlation between women and the kitchen”

Uber has apologised after its food delivery service sent out a message urging men to "let" their wives "take a day off from the kitchen".

It gave a "gentle reminder" that it was Wife Appreciation Day, and offered a discount on its UberEats food delivery service, with the promotional code "nocookingday".

The message sent to customers in Bangalore, India, was meant to coincide with Wife Appreciation Day, which falls annually on the third Sunday of September.

After a series of tweets from people, the company's Chief Brand Officer Bozoma Saint John said: "This is totally unacceptable".

"We've removed it and we apologise", the tweet said.

"Sorry Uber but why do you think that only the "wife" needs to be at the kitchen!" tweeted @GNUmanth.

She added that she would "take care of this".

She said there was no hype on social media, and the story did not feature in the city's main tabloids and newspapers.

As the BBC reports, Uber undertook an investigation into sexual harassment in the company this year, leading to the dismissal of 20 staff.

The latest scandal to hit the ride hailing app comes just one month after the company was accused of allowing a driver who sexually assaulted a passenger to strike again - by not reporting the incident in London.

Mr Kalanick described her experiences as "abhorrent" and against the company's values.
