United States military forces hold joint military exercises with South Korea, Japan”

A USA aircraft carrier will conduct a joint exercise with South Korean forces next month amid rising geopolitical risks on the Korean Peninsula, defence officials confirmed here on Monday.

A pair of B-1B bombers and four F-35 jets flew from Guam and Japan, joining four South Korean F-15K fighters as part of the latest drill.

Stricter worldwide sanctions will only lead North Korea to speed up its nuclear program, according to Pyongyang.

The majority of the defectors fled via China, which has the longest border with North Korea, with the Koreas separated by the heavily protected Demilitarised Zone (DMZ).

Pyongyang says it needs nuclear weapons to protect itself from United States forces.

Trump and South Korea's President Moon seem to agree on tougher sanctions against North Korea in an attempt to curb its nuclear ambitions; however, China has criticized the US for putting what it views as undue pressure on Beijing to rein in Kim Jong Un.

The newspaper also said sanctions should not interfere with legitimate trade between North Korea and the outside world, or harm everyday people.

Trump's National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster has said the U.S. would "have to prepare all options" if sanctions prove insufficient to stop the North's weapons drive.

If a North Korean missile were to threaten USA or Japanese territory, he said, "that would elicit a different response from us".

The effectiveness of the sanctions depends largely on whether China, North Korea's ally and main economic partner, will fully implement them.

US President Donald Trump discussed North Korea's "continued defiance of the global community" with China's President Xi Jinping, the White House said.

Moscow backs Beijing's proposal for a freeze on North Korea's nuclear and missile tests in exchange for a suspension of US-South Korea military drills which China blames for fanning regional tensions.

"The government is sternly responding to North Korea's provocations with pressure and sanctions", Baik added.

North Korea fired an intermediate ballistic missile from its capital that crossed over Japan.

The show of force came as President Donald Trump prepared to deliver remarks for the first time this week at the United Nations General Assembly.

He said that the worldwide community is on the same page over the need to help North Koreans who suffer dire conditions and human rights violations.
