Afghanistan's Ghani Welcomes New US 'Resolve' To Win War In UN Address

Afghanistan's Ghani Welcomes New US 'Resolve' To Win War In UN Address”

Afghanistan president Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has called for worldwide action and a long-term strategy to counter the terrorist organisations sheltered in the region warning that they do not differentiate Kabul and other cities when they strike.

Alluding to this, Ghani said that there was now an opportunity for a dialogue with its neighbours on eliminating terrorism.

Today, there are over 20 worldwide terrorist groups with an imposed presence on Afghan soil, he said. "Only through political settlement can we achieve enduring peace and I call upon all ranks of Taliban to engage in intra-Afghan dialogue", he added.

Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua "conveyed Pakistan's viewpoint" on the recent USA policy announcement pertaining to Afghanistan in a meeting with the United States Undersecretary of State Tom Shannon on Monday in NY, the Foreign Office said. "But this war is not within our soil, it is over our soil", he said.

"President Trump's new strategy includes the disruption and denial of sanctuary to terrorists whose motives know no boundaries", the Afghan president added. "The Afghan people have looked to the United States for this type of resolve for years", Ghani said.

"Driven by transnational terrorist networks, criminal organizations, cyber crime and state sponsorship of terror" the violence "promises to be a decade long threat to national security rather than a passing phenomenon", he said. "In the 20th century, the world came together to push back the spread of fascism, so that democratic freedoms could be secured".

"The future of Afghanistan matters because we are on the frontlines of the global effort to eradicate the threat of terrorism. Aung San Suu Kyi's lengthy silence was tragic, as our hopes that an icon of human rights would choose principle over power".

Ghani, who was elected president in 2014, has focused on bringing stability to his country and combating militant groups such as the Taliban.

He instead has sent thousands more troops to Afghanistan and pledged a tougher line on Pakistan, which has long faced U.S. criticism for its intelligence services´ ties with jihadists and for harboring Osama bin Laden.

"We welcome this strategy, which has now set us on a pathway to certainty".
