Alphabet's Waymo Seeks $2.6 Billion From Uber for Allegedly Stolen Trade Secret

Alphabet's Waymo Seeks $2.6 Billion From Uber for Allegedly Stolen Trade Secret”

Alphabet thinks Uber should pay $2.6 billion for allegedly stealing a single trade secret.

Waymo isn't after chump change in its lawsuit against Uber.

Alphabet Inc. self-driving auto unit Waymo LLC wants at least $2.6 billion in damages from ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies Inc.in its lawsuit dealing with allegedly stolen technology.

Waymo's lawyers, who took time to consider whether to attempt to keep the number private, asserted that the number is based on Waymo and Uber documents that were marketed attorneys' eyes only. AMZN, +0.33% acquired it-arose in a San Francisco federal court hearing Wednesday, as the Alphabet GOOGL, +1.14% GOOG, +1.06% subsidiary's GOOGL, +1.14% lawsuit accusing former Uber executive Anthony Levandowski of stealing self-driving vehicle tech trundles toward its October 10 trial date. The $2.6 billion figure is reportedly for only one trade secret; there are eight others going to trial.

Waymo claimed in a lawsuit earlier this year that former engineer Anthony Levandowski downloaded more than 14,000 confidential files before leaving to set up a self-driving truck company, which Uber acquired soon after.

In its opposition to Alphabet's request for a trial delay, Uber claims Alphabet is simply asking for a "do-over" because its allegations that an executive stole files and brought them to Uber has weakened. Some of the biggest settlements in USA history for a single plaintiff aren't far off, such as a Bank of America settlement over toxic mortgage loans for $16 billion in 2014 and a reward of $23.6 billion to a lung cancer victim in a 2014 lawsuit against RJ Reynolds Tobacco.

Alsup said he would not rule from the bench on Wednesday about when the trial would start. Judge Alsup remained alert to the motivations of both sides and asked that both legal teams push harder to make their arguments as to whether the trial date should be delayed.

Update, 12:53 p.m.: Adds Uber declining to comment.
