Guterres says statesmanship needed on North Korea”

Addressing the 72nd UN General Assembly on Tuesday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres named nuclear weapons, worldwide terrorism, armed conflicts, climate change and negative consequences of scientific progress among the seven most serious threats that the humanity has to face.

In the end, Guterres returned to the theme that he, Mr. Trump and Haley discussed - and agreed upon - on day 1, that of reform: "We need to reform our world, and I am committed to reforming our United Nations".

In his first address to the UN General Assembly since taking office in January, Guterres said the crisis over North Korea's nuclear program and ballistic missile program must be resolved through a political process.

Trump has warned North Korea that military action was an option for the United States as Pyongyang has carried out a series of tests toward developing the ability to target the United States with a nuclear-tipped missile. "The solution must be political - this is a time for statesmanship - we must not sleepwalk our way into war".

The world is facing a host of grave challenges, including rising insecurity, growing inequality, spreading conflict and a changing climate, Secretary General Antonio Guterres said as he opened his first speech at the UN General Assembly.

"Societies are fragmented", he said. "Political discourse is polarized".

The number of refugees on the move in the world can be managed with a global sharing of responsibility, he said. "We need to be a world at peace". But on day one the spotlight is expected to be on Trump and French leader Emmanuel Macron who are also making their debuts at the General Assembly. It looks like he may have succeeded in laying solid foundations to pursue a more ambitious leadership role from here on out.

As a former UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the issue of migration and refugees is close to his heart.

Brazilian President Michel Temer, charged last week with obstruction of justice and leading a criminal organization, continued the tradition. Here are just some of the world's most powerful and lovely women.

But Temer said it is imperative to reform the United Nations, particularly to expand the powerful Security Council to align it with the reality of the 21st century.

"Fiery talk can lead to fatal misunderstandings", he said in his first state-of-the-world report since taking the top job at the United Nations on January 1. He called Iran an "economically depleted rogue state" whose chief export is violence. "You can not counter terrorism without peace", he said. And "it is time to expose and hold responsible" nations that provide funding and safe harbor to terror groups, he said.

Dealing with the realities of the refugee crisis must be a global task, Guterres said, mentioning the thousands who have died trying to reach Europe in perilous sea crossings from Africa and the Middle East, and the still-developing crisis as Rohingya Muslims flee alleged persecution in Myanmar.

Guterres alsov urged Myanmar to halt its military campaign against Rohingya Muslims, just hours after Aung San Suu Kyi failed to quell an worldwide outcry in a much-anticipated nationwide address.

He acknowledged a speech earlier Tuesday by de facto civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in her country. "They must also address the grievances of the Rohingya, whose status has been left unresolved for far too long". The storm was on a track to strike Puerto Rico on Wednesday.
