Jake Arrieta (hamstring) likely to return Thursday for Cubs”

When the Cubs hit the field, Jake Arrieta will make his return from a hamstring injury, as he will start for the team in the series opener at Miller Park.

Arrieta made it through a bullpen session on Tuesday and if he is cleared Wednesday, he'll be the scheduled starter for Thursday against Milwaukee. He would then pitch again on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals and again in the regular season finale against the Cincinnati Reds.

Arrieta has not pitched since a disastrous outing on September 4, when he left after 2 1/3 innings with a hamstring injury. "Give him a chance to get stretched out and everything locked back in".

Arrieta, who has a 14-9 record and a 3.48 ERA in 28 starts this season, suffered a hamstring strain during his last outing against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Labor Day.

Arrieta is expected to max out at 75-80 pitches on Thursday and will ramp up through the end of the month.

He said his final start should come in the regular-season finale against the Reds on October 1.
