Lewis Hamilton claims 'fortunate' win after Vettel's early crash

Lewis Hamilton claims 'fortunate' win after Vettel's early crash”

Formula One next heads to Malaysia, where Ricciardo led Verstappen in a one-two a year ago, after Lewis Hamilton retired his Mercedes from a comfortable lead with a blown engine. Contact between the pair sent Raikkonen spearing into the side of his team-mate's auto.

"If I made a mistake myself I would be upset or angry but there was nothing I could do today". After that, though, we had to make the most of the opportunity that had been presented to us - and out-race a very fast Red Bull. Red Bull brought Ricciardo in for new tyres, also intermediates, and Mercedes left Hamilton out.

"If I'd got stuck behind Kimi I could have been finishing fifth so I could have come out of it a lot worse, so to come out the complete other direction for sure is a shock".

The Aussie's second-place finish was his fourth podium there in a row, falling to championship leader Hamilton, with Bottas third.

With six races remaining, Hamilton could before long find himself in a position where he doesn't need to win another race this season. "I capitalised on the incident - who would have known that would happen?"

As Raikkonen and Verstappen came to a sudden halt at turn one - colliding with an unfortunate Fernando Alonso in the process - Vettel managed to keep his Ferrari on the straight and narrow. Not to mention, the double world champion's tremendous start that saw him jump up to nearly third before being hit by Max Verstappen, who was in turn hit by Kimi Raikkonen. They have sparred on and off track before, most famously when their joust at Mexico previous year so enraged Vettel that he repeatedly swore at the race director, calling for the teenager to be punished for over-aggression, ' he wrote.

The tight twists of the 23-turn circuit were suited to their vehicle, while Mercedes struggled with a distinct lack of pace all weekend.

Ferrari won't enjoy such an advantage at the upcoming races. Two weeks ago, at the Italian Grand Prix, he had some fun with the Ferrari-loyalist crowd, touting his Mercedes engine right in front of them. But he is yet to win races in succession this season.

After that, Hamilton went rather unchallenged and held onto the first place for the rest of the race.

"We mustn't drop the ball", team boss Toto Wolff told reporters on Sunday.

But Hamilton kept his cool to not only remain in charge of the championship - a scenario which appeared nearly impossible here on Saturday night - but extended his lead to more than a single victory. "Today we benefited from their misfortune, it happened to us in the past".
