LSU running back Derrius Guice 'very questionable' for matchup with Syracuse

LSU running back Derrius Guice 'very questionable' for matchup with Syracuse”

Coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday that Guice (undisclosed) is "very questionable" for Saturday's game against Syracuse, Ross Dellenger of The Advocate reports.

After last week's 37-7 loss to Mississippi State, Guice said that he was a "little nicked", apparently the result of an injury while being caught up in a pile during the third quarter against the Bulldogs. Guice has not practiced this week due to an injured hamstring. This is a swift rhetorical change of direction for Coach O after he labeled it a "minor injury" on Monday.

Syracuse looked like an opportunity for Guice to deliver a signature performance.

LSU has long leaned on a run-first offense bolstered by a stable of talented running backs, and while things continue to open up a bit more under head coach Orgeron and offensive coordinator Matt Canada, the running game remains the Tigers' bread and butter.

If Guice is forced to miss some time, senior Darrel Williams is the prime candidate to get the lion's share of the carries.

So far this season, Guice has rushed for 300 yards and 4 touchdowns through three games. Nick Brossette and Clyde Edwards-Helaire also have received a fair number of snaps.

On the other end of the injury front, the Tigers got more encouraging news on the status of defensive end Rashard Lawrence. "I don't know how many snaps but I think he's going to play".

Guice did not wear pads at practice Tuesday.

Lawrence's backup, freshman Neil Farrell, will miss the first half due to a targeting penalty he incurred against Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.
