MA sues Equifax for failing to protect state residents

MA sues Equifax for failing to protect state residents”

A data breach of the company has compromised the personal information of about 143 million Americans. The group is creating a committee of current and former attorneys general and other partners to recruit, train and raise money for female candidates as part of what they are calling the 1881 Initiative, named for the first year that a woman sought, unsuccessfully, the office of state attorney general.

Further, the attorneys general want Equifax to reimburse consumers who have to pay the nation's other two major credit bureaus, Experian and Transunion, when getting a credit freeze from those firms, in order to completely freeze their credit.

Hawley said the investigation began shortly following Equifax's disclosure of the breach of consumer files earlier this summer.

Attorney General Hawley has requested information about the circumstances that led to the breach, the reasons for the months-long delay between the breach and the company's public disclosure, what protections the company had in place at the time of the breach, and how the company intends to protect consumers affected by the breach.

Massachusetts' lawsuit is the first official enforcement action in what is expected to be a massive legal onslaught against Equifax in the wake of a hack that exposed the personal financial data of as many as 143 million people in the USA, including names, Social Security numbers, birthdates and addresses of customers. He also called the company's actions were unfair. Hackers may use them to file false tax returns and get a refund; you'll only find out when you try to file your taxes and are told they are already filed.
