Sushma Swaraj meets Sheikh Hasina, Bhutanese PM”

The Indian foreign minister arrived in NY on Sunday for seven days of back-to-back engagements centring around the U.N. General Assembly, including her first meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

However, Swaraj and Hasina did not discuss the "burning" issue of Rohingya refugees during their meeting, said a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs.

In a series of high-level diplomatic engagements, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met with Prime Ministers Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan.According to the official sources, Ms Swaraj also met five Foreign Ministers of different countries in interactions that mostly focused on bilateral and economic issues.

Sheikh Hasina is now in NY to attend the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), reports UNB.

She met the Bangladeshi Prime Minister and the meeting was very short terming it as a courtesy visit.

At the tri-lateral meet between the leader of the three countries, Swaraj discussed nuclear proliferation and maritime security with USA and Japan, the media quoted spokesperson Raveesh Kumar as saying.

After the meeting, he also tweeted "Warm encounter reflecting our historical and cultural ties. The issue of Rohingya did not come up during the meeting for discussion", he said.

In the last three weeks, around four lakh Rohingyas facing violence and persecution at the hands of Myanmar government have taken shelter in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has urged the United Nations to put pressure on Myanmar to address the Rohingya issue.

According to the United Nations reports around 410,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar's Rakhine state into Bangladesh since August 25.

Earlier, Swaraj held a ministerial trilateral meeting with the United States Secretary of State, Rex W. Tillerson, and Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Taro Kono on Monday and discussed connectivity and proliferation issues. Kumar said that since the Dokhlam dispute was already resolved, there was no need to bring up the matter during the meet.

Apart from addressing the UNGA, the PM would also take part in a variety of events on the sidelines and hold bilateral meetings with global leaders to mount pressure on Myanmar for halting the ethnic cleansing in Rakhine and taking back the Rohingyas.

After the meeting, Kumar tweeted "Strengthening traditionally unique bilateral relations. We discussed the wide range of bilateral cooperation".
