Trump Has New Message at United Nations for N. Korea's 'Rocket Man'

"I applaud the Secretary General for laying out a vision to reform the United Nations so that it better serves the people we all represent".

Richard Gowan, a United Nations expert with with the European Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump "performed poorly" at previous worldwide meetings, and diplomats are concerned about a rerun.

"I know that under the secretary-general, that's changing and it's changing fast and we've seen it", he said. Tonight at 6:30 p.m. Trump will host a dinner for Latin American leaders with Vice President Mike Pence.

Guterres pledged when he took office to streamline the organization's budget and bureaucratic rules, as well as foster accountability in the United Nations management.

The US ambassador to the UN warned North Korea will be destroyed if it continues its "reckless behaviour" and forces the United States and its allies to defend themselves against any attack.

Shifting his attention to the Middle East, Trump said America will revisit its agreement with Iran to stop the Islamic country from its nuclear program.

Arriving to his first General Assembly, Trump previewed a "great week" ahead and referenced the ongoing tensions with North Korea.

Trump, who is scheduled to address the General Assembly on its opening day Tuesday, praised some United Nations initiatives but contended that the global body has failed to produce results in line with the investment in it.

While still a candidate for the U.S. presidency, Mr Trump sharply criticised the United Nations, speaking of its "utter weakness and incompetence".

North Korea's missile tests and bellicose rhetoric have overshadowed the gathering as Trump coordinates with allies, Japan and South Korea, while pressuring China and Russian Federation to do more.

Despite his criticisms, he also complimented the steps the United Nations had taken in the early stages of the reform process and made no threats to withdraw his nation's support.
