Tyson Foods will put plans for Leavenworth County on hold

Tyson Foods will put plans for Leavenworth County on hold”

"Growing Kansas means we must grow the food and agriculture sector, which accounts for almost 45 percent of the state's economy", Brownback said at the time. It could process as many as 1.2 million chickens each week. "And this is how people react when they don't have enough answers to a particular question they keep asking over and over". "They're getting ready, so to speak, to put their names forward".

A move by Tyson Foods to build a $320 million meat-packing plant near Tonganoxie may be in trouble after Leavenworth County commissioners backed off support for the controversial facility. The announcement comes after a massive show of opposition to the plant, last Friday, caused Leavenworth County commissioners to pull their support for the plan on Monday. Officials said the resolution was not a contract, simply a notice of intention to make a financing structure available.

Also at that meeting, Commisioner Clyde Graeber stepped down because of health reasons, further putting the process in a state of limbo.

"Our steps are limited until they name a new commissioner", said Tyson Foods representative Worth Sparkman.

"They deserve some answers", he said.

Tyson said it expected concerns from people around Tonganoxie and had planned to hold more meetings with the people who lived there and even invited community leaders to see the facilities. Tonganoxie's population is about 5,000.

The Star's Hunter Woodall contributed to this report. The town's mayor, Jason Ward, works for a Kansas City law firm that does business with Tyson. "However, we need to be sensitive as state lawmakers to communities' wishes". Given our success here it made a lot of sense to consider new growth plans in Kansas.

The plan, including state and local economic incentives, was drafted behind closed doors and made public at an event earlier this month.

"We were patiently waiting for someone in the crowd to come up and say something about this, that they thought it was a good thing".

Commissioners took back a "resolution of intent" that pledged $500 million in revenue bonds to build the plant.

"Many of you fear this is a done deal, we don't have any choice". Unfortunately, we've not been able to reach as many of you as quickly as we had hoped.
