Aaron Hernandez Fiancee Sues Patriots & NFL ... Over CTE Claims”

According to an announcement from an attorney who represented Aaron Hernandez, researchers who examined Hernandez's brain found a severe case of CTE, the degenerative brain disease linked to concussions and repetitive head trauma.

The Times reports that Hernandez's lawyer says doctors determined his client to have "the most severe case they had ever seen in someone of Aaron's age" of 27.

Lawyers for Hernandez's daughter, Avielle, filed a lawsuit on her behalf against the National Football League and the New England Patriots for the loss of her parent.

Shortly after he was found not guilty on double-murder charges in April, Hernandez's body was found in his prison cell in an apparent suicide. Baez held a press conference outside the Massachusetts Medical Examiner's office and accused the office of refusing to release the brain for study.

A judge earlier this year vacated that conviction, because Hernandez had not exhausted all his avenues of appeal by the time he died, a move allowed by a quirk in MA law.

Test results on Aaron Hernandez's brain showed severe CTE. However, those results should not be assumed to extrapolate across the full population of football players; the brains the center receives are usually donations from families who suspected CTE while the person was alive.

Among the former players found to have had CTE in their brains are Frank Gifford, Junior Seau and Ken Stabler, BU has found. Boston University officials say Hernandez also had early brain atrophy and perforations in a central membrane.

This graphic shows the classic features of CTE in the brain of Mr. Hernandez. There is severe deposition of tau protein in the frontal lobes of the brain (top row).

Dr. McKee and the BU CTE team have extensive experience in the diagnosis of CTE and have contributed landmark publications on traumatic brain injury and CTE in athletes and Veterans. Her research has demonstrated that CTE is associated with aggressiveness, explosiveness, impulsivity, depression, memory loss and other cognitive changes.
