Chicago accepting nominations for Amazon sites”

Mayor Emanuel made his search for a potential Amazon HQ2 site official.

The sleepy Chicago suburb of Oak Brook says it's got just the thing to beat the approximately 90,000 other cities vying for Amazon's second headquarters. The e-commerce giant said it would invest $5 billion in the headquarters - its first outside of Seattle - and that it plans to eventually house 50,000 Amazon employees there. The city says nominated sites must meet Amazon requirements, including having enough space, room for expansion and be near transit and O'Hare International Airport. The giant says it wants the new headquarters to be near a metropolitan area with more than one million people, be able to attract top technical talent, be within 45 minutes of an worldwide airport, have direct access to mass transit and be able to expand to as much as 8 million square feet in the next decade. Since 1971, the small IL village of 7,883 has been the work home of thousands of McDonald's corporate employees, but the burger chain decamps for Chicago proper sometime in 2018 - conveniently, just in time for Amazon to open "phase one" of HQ2, its new 50,000-job headquarters. The city says only property owners or entities with site control can make a nomination.

Amazon's requirements include a 500,000 square feet of initial space and the ability to expand up to 8 million square feet of space over the next 10 years, according to the proposal issued by the company.

The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017.
