Consumer Goods Forum Calls for Streamlined Food Labels Worldwide by 2020”

So, The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) - a network of 400 of the biggest consumer goods companies across 70 countries - along with Champions 12.3 has agreed to standardize food date labels worldwide by 2020.

It is described as the first deal of its kind between a major retailer and its food suppliers, and follows similar moves by the IGD and Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) to align branded suppliers with the Champions 12.3 goals.

"This low lying-fruit of date labeling standardization is exactly the type of solution that everyone can agree is fairly low-effort, cost-effective and has a positive impact on reducing consumer confusion which ultimately helps to reduce food waste", Eva Goulbourne, a ReFED spokeswoman, told the Foundation.

The CGF includes most of the world's consumer goods giants from Tesco Plc to Campbell Soup, Nestle SA and Unilever Plc.

Foodservice companies in the United Kingdom throw away 920,000 tonnes of waste a year, of which 75% is avoidable. The average UK household with children spends £700 a year on food that's thrown away - in the United States, that figure is $1,500.

Businesses are also urged to work with governments to educate consumers about how to interpret date labels.

Improving consumer education and awareness in order to better understand what the date labels mean.

It is hoped that by defining the labels it will reduce wasted food, save families money and reduce their environmental footprint. Efforts such as in-store displays, web materials and public service announcements could play a critical role in shifting consumer consumption behaviors.

The Champions 12.3 report that was also released today measures progress towards the twelfth SDG's food waste target against the three-year milestones on the way to the 2030 target date.

The call to action was made in partnership with Champions 12:3, the organisation set up to monitor progress over the SDG target to halve global food waste and reduce food loss by 2030.

The report finds that countries and companies are setting reduction targets aligned with SDG Target 12.3 - today, 28% of the world's population live in a country or region with a target to reduce food loss and waste, and almost 60% of the world's 50 largest food companies have set reduction targets. A growing number of the 50 largest food companies now have active food loss and waste reduction programs.

In terms of measuring performance in reducing food waste, governments lag behind companies with only seven per cent of the world's population living in countries where food reduction performance is measured and reported, while several of the world's largest companies have begun reporting on food loss and waste, such as Sainsbury's release of its food waste report back in September 2016.
