Equifax sends breach victims to fake notification site”

Now Equifax knows what it's like to have its identity stolen. The message came in response to a question about free credit monitoring Equifax is offering victims. The decision to do all of this on a separate domain rather than its known and trusted Equifax.com website was controversial.

Additionally, while appreciative that Equifax will be reimbursing consumers who paid a fee to freeze their Equifax credit reports as of September 7, 2017, the date the breach was announced, General Slatery urged Equifax to extend the free credit freezes past the current deadline of November 21, 2017 and to reimburse fees paid by consumers for security freezes by other credit reporting agencies. "Equifax should have hosted this on equifax.com with a reputable [EV] SSL Certificate", the site continues to lambast the company. Some Equifax team members were spotted tweeting the phishing website link to people instead of the official link.

Equifax did not respond to a request for comment.

If you look closely at the above pictured Twitter exchange, you'll see that someone operating the Equifax account named Tim linked to the fake website.

"Cybersecurity Incident & Important Consumer Information Which is Totally Fake, Why Did Equifax Use A Domain That's So Easily Impersonated By Phishing Sites", the fake site reads.

"My office is working aggressively to protect the interests of Missourians in light of the recent Equifax breach", Hawley says. In the 11 days since then, he said he's received more than 100,000 hits on his fake URL.

Sweeting, who spent $10 to buy the domain, said it took 20 minutes to build a clone. It cost him $15 for domain hosting and server maintenance. He stressed that his site is not malicious and does not store user data. "I can guarantee there are real malicious phishing versions already out there". There is no real contact information on the page, and numerous links take you to a YouTube video for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" - a classic internet prank known as "rickrolling".

Equifax's entire response to the breach has been a mess. Mark Warner (D-Virginia) have demanded answers from Equifax on how the breach happened.
