Google rolls out Android zero-touch enrollment for the enterprise

Google rolls out Android zero-touch enrollment for the enterprise”

Google's looking to make it easier and safer for enterprises to get new Android devices into the hands of employees with Thursday's introduction of an automated device enrollment option. And to kick things off, zero-touch is only available on Google's own Pixel phones through Verizon in the US, from today.

The Mountain View ads giant said the feature, dubbed "Zero Touch Enrollment" would make it far easier for companies to get full deployments of new Android devices into the hands of employees and allow new workers to quickly get up and running. Google also said that any Samsung device that ships with, or is updated to, Android Oreo will support zero-touch. Not only does it eliminate the need for the user (or IT people) to set everything up manually, but it ensures everyone has the same corporate policies in place.

It's pretty much the same as Apple's device enrollment program, which rolled out back in 2014, and which also promises zero-touch configuration for IT.

Google is working with several OEMs now to bring zero-touch to their devices, including Samsung, Huawei, Sony, LG Electronics, HTC, Motorola, Honeywell and Zebra.

Organizations can use software from VMware AirWatch, BlackBerry, MobileIron, IBM, Gsuite, and others to pick configurations and device policies that are automatically applied.

"For our business customers, deploying new devices and services securely with the ability to enforce device-specific policies is critical for protecting proprietary information and an organization's brand", Ryan O'Shea, vice president of National Business Channels with Verizon Wireless, said in the release. Later this year, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile will offer it in the U.S., while BT and Deutsche Telekom will offer it in Europe.

The Google Pixel phone on Verizon will be the first device to support zero-touch enrollment, but more hardware and carrier partners are coming soon.

"If your company already uses other enrollment methods, don't worry - you can mix enrollment methods to suit your particular needs", notes Nugent.
