Hackers Had Access to Equifax System for Months Before Breach Was Discovered”

Hackers were moving freely in Equifax Inc.'s (EFX) computer network for months before the company discovered a breach, the Wall Street Journal reported citing a confidential note Equifax sent to some of its customers. The report says hackers entered the command "Whoami", which would have allowed them to determine a username for a computer it had gained access to.

The report, which was obtained by Reuters, described the techniques that the unknown attackers used to compromise Equifax, including exploitation of a vulnerability in a software known as Apache Struts that was used to build the online dispute website. It did not mention earlier activity. But the representative characterized that as "part of a common pattern of probing of systems on the Internet to find vulnerabilities".

Equifax has previously said the attack on its systems began in May. A spokeswoman for FireEye, a subsidiary of security firm Mandiant, declined to comment.
