India wins 1 gold, 2 bronze at Asian Indoor Games”

The Philippines settled for two silver medals this time as fancied weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz and Fil-American Eric Shaun Cray were beaten by their determined rivals in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) yesterday at the Ashgabat Olympic Complex here. The Indian gold medalist has won many state, national and worldwide school meet gold medals in middle and long distance track events.

Muhammad Safdar won the medal in the men's classic style competition, 65kg weight category.

Iranian taekwondo fighter Erfan Nazemi also demonstrated incredible displays of spinning kicks and fast kicking techniques in his march to the final showdown of men's minus 80-kilogram weight category.

Just as Keshena Waterford was claiming the nation's first ever medal at the event it was announced that Australia, as well as other Oceania nations, will be able to participate at the 2022 Asian Games in selected sports.

Additionally, Iranian high jumper Keyvan Ghanbarzadeh added another silver to the Islamic Republic's medal tally by registering 2.26 meters in the final contest.

Australia now has 18 athletes competing across taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling at Ashgabat 2017 in what is our debut Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.

India are now 10th in the medals tally at the 26-nation event with three gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

The country's savior in the Rio Olympics a year ago after winning a silver medal, Diaz finished second behind Chinese Liao Qiuyun.

Kazakhstan, China, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and India have earned the 4th to 8th places respectively.
