Justin Upton's Home Run Didn't Count Towards $1M Paint Promotion

Justin Upton's Home Run Didn't Count Towards $1M Paint Promotion”

But it depends on what your definition of "landing" is.

On Tuesday, during a 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians, Angels outfielder Justin Upton launched a ninth-inning home run ball that one-hopped its way into the can. But the sign did say, "Angels home run in the can".

Apparently, someone on the paint company's legal team saw a situation like this coming and included a line about the promotion only occurring if the ball lands in the paint can on the fly. It's explained in a 2014 press release, when the promotional can had the Frazee Paint brand on it. The height of the can is 10 feet in the back and 9 feet in the front, creating a more convenient angle for the batter. The ball took a big bounce beyond the outfield fence and landed in Angel Stadium's paint can sponsored by building materials company Sherwin Williams. Frazee Paint is now owned by Sherwin Williams.

Major League Baseball is now not allowing the video to be embedded so here's the link if you want to watch it.

Sherwin Williams can do what it wants with its money, and $1 million is a ton of money. Upton's homer was the 32nd of the season, setting a new career high. Not a bad number to take into free agency if he chooses to opt out of his contract, which he can do after the season.
