Merkel condemns Trump's North Korea threat”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday criticized U.S. President Donald Trump' remarks about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), saying any type of military solution was "absolutely inappropriate".

Merkel said she told Trump by telephone a few days ago that a diplomatic solution must be found. "But I consider everything else concerning North Korea as wrong", she added. "And this is why there is a clear disagreement on this point with the American president", Merkel said.

"And that is why we [the German government] clearly disagree with the USA president", said Merkel.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday rallied behind the United States warning that "all options" are available to deal with North Korea and declared the time for dialogue over.

The Trump administration has been pushing for greater worldwide pressure on North Korea through the United Nations and by pressuring China, Pyongyang's main trade ally.

Trump threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if it continued with its nuclear arms development, but Merkel said sanctions are "the right answer".

The pressure peaked in early September, when the North announced that it had successfully exploded a hydrogen bomb, its sixth overall thermonuclear test. "And this is why I am ready - and the foreign minister (Social Democrat Sigmar Gabriel) is ready - to assume my responsibilities".
