Nikki Haley: Trump's fire and fury comment 'not an empty threat'

Nikki Haley: Trump's fire and fury comment 'not an empty threat'”

The meetings on the sidelines of the United Nations are often done in rapid succession, a wearying test for even the most experienced foreign policy team.

"A lot of leaders are really very scared that the US could blunder into war pretty much by accident on the Korean Peninsula", said Richard Gowan, an associate fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. While Washington warns of military options, it says it still wants a peaceful solution.

"After seeing your capabilities and commitment here today, I am more confident than ever that our options in addressing this threat are both effective and overwhelming", Trump said inside an airplane hangar, surrounded by USA airmen and with a looming stealth bomber positioned behind him.

His Tuesday morning speech will undoubtedly be widely watched, not least of all by the North Korean delegation, which, because of the seating rotation in the hall, has drawn a front row seat this year. On Monday, it unanimously approved its toughest sanctions yet on North Korea over its nuclear test.

Trump plans to sit down with Moon and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during the U.N. General Assembly session this week. North Korea is closer than ever to its goal of building a military arsenal that can viably target both US troops in Asia and the American homeland. Though they aren't their top choices for the region, Haley and McMaster said, they are available to the President.

The warnings came a day after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to continue the weapons programs, saying his country is nearing its goal of "equilibrium" in military force with the United States.

Trump's broadsides against "rogue regimes", North Korea chief among them, drew murmurs from the assembled world leaders and served as a searing salute to his nationalism during diplomatic prime time.

North Korea conducted its longest-ever test flight of a ballistic missile Friday, sending an intermediate-range weapon hurtling over US ally Japan into the northern Pacific Ocean in a launch that signals both defiance of its rivals and a big technological advance.

The authors also called for the appointment of an Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs as well as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, saying that permanent appointees would help ensure that recent sanctions aimed at curbing Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs were properly enforces.

"For those who have been commenting about the lack of a military option, there is a military option", said National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster. "Now it is not what we would prefer to do".

His lashing of North Korea was a vigorous restatement of what's been said by USA leaders before, but delivered with new intensity in the august setting of the General Assembly. Some 25 million people live in the metropolitan area of Seoul, U.S. ally South Korea's capital, well within range of the North's extensive artillery. And he scolded that it was "an outrage" to enable and trade with North Korea, seeming to point a finger at China, although he did not mention it by name.

Trump called the U.N. -backed Iran nuclear deal "an embarrassment" to the United States and suggested it was one of the worst global pacts ever struck.

Briefing reporters ahead of the annual United Nations meeting, U.S. ambassador Nikki Haley and White House national security adviser HR McMaster took a tough line on North Korea, warning that a military option to deal with its nuclear threats was available.

Lisa Collins, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said other nations will be watching the United States at the U.N. next week to determine Trump's next steps. Trump also tweeted that long lines for gas are forming in North Korea and called it "too bad".

"I don't think it's helpful for anyone to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation", May said.
