Ontario Provincial Police Charge 10 for Motorcycle Stunt Driving”

Motorcyclists performing unsafe stunts in large groups have been spotted around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in recent years, including in a "mob" that caused major traffic delays around the GTA in August.

An investigation into a series of unsafe motorcycle stunts that snarled traffic on major highways in and around the Toronto area this summer has led to 48 charges, provincial police announced Wednesday. "We thank the participants for providing us with this evidence", Supt.

"The danger that these rogue riders presented to themselves and to the unsuspecting drivers that they distracted, cut off, or when they totally stopped in a live lane, was beyond belief, said OPP Superintendent Alison Jevons. These stunts that self-servingly fuel their egos needed to be stopped before anyone was killed or maimed".

Project SADDLE was conducted between June and September, and officials released aerial video of the motorcycle driving behavior that was investigated and lead to the charges.

Schmidt added that five motorcycles were seized as offense-related property and that an additional six charges were laid in relation to illegal drug offenses.

Police credited tips from the public for helping them identify some participants involved in an incident on August 6.

The stunts occurred during a period when carnage involving motorcycles was particularly high and the subject of repeated road safety warnings, police said.

Charges laid include unsafe operation of a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit the indictable offense of risky operation of a motor vehicle, mischief and flight while pursued by a police officer.

Police said that while the accused do not appear to be members of outlaw motorcycle gangs, they are organized and sell merchandise such as t-shirts to fuel their activities.

Motorcycle mobs have refused to stop for police and have swarmed police officers in a threatening manner on several occasions, police said.

Other charges laid as part of the investigation include driving while suspended, no licence plates, plates not visible, improper helmets, and improper permits and equipment.

Police say there are a lot of these motorcycle mobs cropping up all over North America but OPP believe this was the first concerted effort to crack down on them.
