Pence Blasts UN Human Rights Council In Speech To General Assembly

Pence Blasts UN Human Rights Council In Speech To General Assembly”

The US vice president also criticized the Human Rights Council for what he said was its pattern of targeting Israel, calling it a forum for anti-Semitism and invective against the Jewish state. "The Human Rights Council has passed more than 70 resolutions condemning Israel, while largely ignoring the world's worst human rights abusers".

In an address to the U.N. Security Council, Pence reiterated the calls Trump made in prior days that the U.N. needed broad reforms to deliver on its goals and to provide value for the investment put into it. Pence used the opportunity of a vote on a resolution calling for peacekeeping reform to urge for the worldwide body to act to make the peacekeeping missions "more efficient, more effective, more accountable, and more credible".

"As the president said yesterday, the United States has 'great strength and patience, ' but all options are on the table", Pence told the council at a meeting on the reform of U.N. peacekeeping operations, referring to President Donald Trump's speech to the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday. "We call on the Security Council and this entire body to immediately reform the membership and practices of the Human Rights Council - and end the Human Rights Council's blatant bias against our cherished ally, Israel".

Trump on Tuesday called the Council's membership "a massive source of embarrassment". "Venezuela sits on the Human Rights Council, a dictatorship that undermines democracy at every turn, imprisons political opponents, and, as we speak, is advancing policies that worsen deprivation and poverty that is costing the lives of innocent men, women, and children".

Pence spoke to the the UN Security Council, and applauded them for unanimously passing another round of economic sanctions against the communist nation, as it continues to remain a threat with multiple ICBM tests.

As an example, Mr. Pence pointed to the systematic attacks by Burma's security forces against minority Rohingya Muslims.

He accused the Myanmar military of responding to militant attacks on government outposts "with awful savagery, burning villages, driving the Rohingya from their homes".

"The images of the violence and its victims have shocked the American people and decent people all over the world", he said.

"And now we're witnessing a historic exodus".

Unless the violence was stopped, it would only become worse and "consume the region for generations to come and threaten the peace of us all", the vice president said.
