A SpiceJet aircraft with 183 passengers on board overshot the the runway while landing here and got stuck in the soft mud on Tuesday evening, officials said. All worldwide flights have been diverted to Bengaluru. The flight was coming from Varanasi.

Torrential rains leading to poor visibility forced cancellation of all flight operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here on Tuesday night till 5 p.m. on Wednesday, sources said. "All passengers deplaned safely and taken to the arrival hall", an official statement from Spice Jet read.

"The secondary runway had been closed due to heavy winds". Flights from Mumbai are being diverted to airports in Goa, Hyderabad, Vadodara and Bengaluru.

"Central Industrial Security Force's Quick Reaction Team (QRT) along with MIAL fire team carried out the rescue operation", said a senior airport official. Operations again had to be suspended post the SpiceJet incident and remained to be suspended.

As work was on to extricate the stuck aircraft, regular flight operations were affected. More than 100 flights from Mumbai airport are expected to be diverted due to the shutdown. "Coaches were deployed for airside transfer of passengers from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2. The disabled aircraft recovery kit from Air India is at site and preparation of pavement underneath the aircraft is in progress", a Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) spokesperson said.
