Solano, Aegis Juris frat boys now persons of interest”

On Sunday, Castillo's body bearing bruises and burns was found dumped along a street in Balut, Tondo.

"He claimed he only found the body of the victim on the early hours of September 17 and brought him to the hospital when in fact, Solano knew the victim even before the death of Castillo".

Solano, who also initially identified himself as a medical technologist from San Lazaro Hospital, was also a law student from UST and a member of the Aegis Juris, according to sources.

In a unusual twist of events, it's also come to light that the law student, John Paul Solano, who claimed to have found Castillo's body is now one of the police's "primary suspects" along with two other individuals.

"As you can see we have strong evidence to show that Mr. John Paul Solano deliberately, intentionally, and maliciously gave false statements to the Manila Police District relative to the investigation of the Horacio Castillo killing", Coronel said.

"So far his statement is inconsistent with testimonies and observations given by barangay officials", the police official said. He was found by his family at a funeral home with hematoma and candle drips before dawn Monday.

Coronel said the red pick-up truck, which was used to bring Castillo to the hospital, was registered under the name of Antonio Trangia who they believe is the father of Ralph, a leader of the Aegis Juris fraternity. He was to go to class and attend the welcoming rites of Aegis Juris, a fraternity recognized by the school.

While Castillo's parents were reportedly hesitant to let their son join Aegis Juris Fraternity, he managed to convince them the society doesn't practice hazing.

Divina also said he implemented a policy to prohibit fraternities from recruiting freshmen.

"All officers of the Aegis Juris Fraternity now enrolled are considered suspects, which is also provided under the Anti-Hazing Law wherein officers of fraternities and organizations are to be held liable for the incidents such as hazing take place. So they are already considered as suspects", Coronel said.

The MPD chief also said they already have strong and solid leads on the identity of other suspects, but they can not release it yet pending follow-up investigation.

"We express our profound sympathy and offer our prayers to his family for their pain and anguish-- a pain that we share seeing that the life of our very own student, with all of its aspirations and potentials, taken away because of a senseless act", the university said in a statement.

He said they had hard time in gathering information when they went to UST because the dean of Faculty of Civil Law, lawyer Nilo Divina, issued an order suspending Aegis Juris fraternity members from entering the school premises to ensure "unobstructed investigation".

"There is a need to improve the existing mechanisms for the deterrence of hazing-related crimes", Aquino said.
