Three-belt light-heavyweight boxing champion Andre Ward announces his retirement

Three-belt light-heavyweight boxing champion Andre Ward announces his retirement”

Light heavyweight world titleholder Andre Ward on Thursday announced plans to "walk away from the sport of boxing".

"If I can not give my family, my team, and the fans everything that I have, then I should no longer be fighting", he wrote.

One notable fighter that stands out in this regards is Shakur Stevenson - who hired Ward and others to guide his career as a management team when he turned pro with promoters Top Rank in the not too distant past.

"First Take" host and boxing aficionado Max Kellerman put Ward, an Olympic gold medalist in 2004, in a rare category of fighters who chose to go out on top, a group that includes Rocky Marciano, Floyd Mayweather, Lennox Lewis and Gene Tunney.

In the record of the ward's two victories over Sergey Kovalev, the successful fights against Arthur Abraham, Mikkel Kessler, Allan green, Carl Fros, Chad Dawson, Edwin Rodriguez, Sullivan Barrera and others. I made up my mind that it was never going to happen again in terms of what I can control.

Ward defended those three belts when he stopped Kovalev in the eighth round in June in Las Vegas. You and I will always be synonymous, connected at the hip.

"Just the accumulative effect of all the training and all the fights, it starts to wear on you and ... starts to take your desire", Ward said. I did it. We did it. "I thank God that he allowed me to do what you love for as long as needed", wrote boxer. You know who you are. "If I can not give my family, my team, and the fans everything that I have, then I should no longer be fighting", Ward continued to write in his statement. I could not have done this without you. The last time Ward lost a fight was against John Revish at the 1997 National Silver Gloves tournament in Baton Rouge when he was 13. "To watch Ward was to marvel at constant mastery of craft in the ring, to say nothing of his being the consummate role model outside it".
