What's changed with North Korea in five weeks since 'fire and fury'”

Trump's latest tweets came two weeks after North Korea tested a nuclear device that experts said measured at 250 kilotons, 17 times the force of the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in World War II.

In the days leading up to the UN General Assembly in New York Trump has been actively engaged in diplomacy with countries in the region, conversations that have focused mainly on the threat posed by North Korea.

The latest sanctions imposed against the regime have been described as the toughest yet, including a ban on the country's textile exports and capping imports of crude oil.

Meanwhile, the USA and South Korea have agreed to increase pressure on North Korea after its latest missile test, the White House said on Sunday.

National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster tells reporters the president will stress his "ironclad commitment to free, fair and reciprocal trade" as the "bedrock" of his economic talks.

"If our diplomatic efforts fail though, our military option will be the only one left", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told CBS News' "Face the Nation".

McMaster emphasized that it's the responsibility of all nations to enforce U.N. sanctions on North Korea and address the problem.

Trump's chief diplomat held out hope the North would return to the bargaining table, though the president's envoy to the United Nations said the Security Council had "pretty much exhausted" all its options.

"I am confident that if we work together and champion truly bold reforms the United Nations will emerge as a stronger, more effective, more just and greater force for peace and harmony in the world", Trump said in his first remarks at the U.N.in NY since his inauguration as president in January. She added that Defense Secretary James Mattis has "an army of options" to destroy North Korea.

He will also host a lunch that day with the leaders of Japan and South Korea, which both feel threatened by North Korea's growing missile program.

The top USA diplomat made a rare appearance on a Sunday talk show, where he said the US strategy is to pursue a "peaceful pressure campaign" based on what he called the four "nos": not seeking either regime change or collapse in North Korea, an accelerated re-unification of the Korean Peninsula, or a reason to send in military forces. However, the accuracy of the missile, still at an early stage of development, was low, it said.

Haley, speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," said Trump's decision to not strike at North Korea after making that comment - seemingly a red line warning North Korea not to continue testing weapons that could threaten the United States - was responsible.

North Korea staged its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb test earlier this month and in July tested long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching at least parts of the US mainland.

The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has called on the global community to remain united and enforce sanctions against North Korea after its repeated launch of ballistic missiles. Though many would argue the millions who would be killed in a war now would be enough of a deterrent, USA officials continue to insist that the military option is a realistic one. Trump said last week he would be willing to mediate the worst dispute in decades between Qatar and USA -allied Arab states. Administration officials reaffirmed the United States' long-standing policy that the North must agree to relinquish its nuclear arsenal as a prerequisite for direct diplomatic talks. The United States is the single largest funder of the U.N., contributing 22 percent of the U.N. budget.

The Wall Street Journal and other news organizations reported Saturday that Trump administration officials, speaking at a climate meeting in Montreal, discussed a compromise that would involve staying in the deal but revising US climate change goals. "But be clear: we seek a peaceful solution to this". Trump's United Nations ambassador, Nikki Haley, said North Korea was starting to "feel the pinch".

"I spoke with President Moon of South Korea last night".

Administration officials believe it will take intense financial sanctions and tariffs to pressure the Chinese to do a lot more to choke off the North Korean economy.
