Election Commission to hear Two Leaves symbol pleas on October 5”

The Election Commission has rescheduled the hearing on the AIADMK's "two leaves" symbol dispute for October 6.

"The AIADMK is now functioning as one party with the two groups having unified".

The resolutions included removing interim general secretary VK Sasikala from all party posts and invalidating appointments made by her, including that of her nephew TTV Dhinakaran as deputy general secretary. A delegation comprising representatives of the re-united Palaniswamy and Pannseerselvam bloc on Friday brought to the Commission's notice that the two rival groups had merged on August 21 and submitted a letter as proof. On Friday she met the chief minister at his residence and later speaking to reporters she accused Dinakaran of joining hands with the DMK in a bid to topple the government formed by "Amma" (late chief minister J.Jayalalithaa). He was flanked by RS MP V Maitreyan and senior leader P H Manoj Pandian of the OPS camps. "The EC has been informed about all these changes in party rules and regulations", he said. It has informed all parties to the dispute that they can file any fresh submissions by September 29. The two factions have so far submitted around 10 lakh affidavits staking claim to the symbol and the title of the party.

With the Madurai Bench of the Madras high court asking the EC to dispose of all petitions by October 31, the poll body asked all concerned to give their replies in hard and soft copies by September 29.

The Election Commission had frozen the symbol ahead of the RK Nagar bye-polls that were scheduled to take place in March, after both factions had staked claim to the party symbol in February.

Supporters of ousted AIADMK deputy general Secretary TTV Dhinakaran have already approached the EC to ask that the September 12 General Council meeting be declared invalid. Individual affidavits of support from ministers, MLAs and MPs and headquarters office-bearers would be submitted to the poll panel, Munusamy said.
