Inbound tourism surges to record level during month of July”

Non-UK residents made 4m visits to Britain in July, an increase of 6% on past year and spent £2.7bn, up 3% on July 2016, according to the Office for National Statistics.

In the first seven months of the year, the number of overseas visitors to Britain rose by 8 percent while Britons travelling abroad rose by 3 percent, the ONS said, based on preliminary data.

Tourism minister John Glen commented: "Tourism is a major economic force that creates jobs and drives growth for the whole of the country".

Foreign visitors to Britain spent 13.3 billion pounds in the January-July period, up 9 percent, while Britons increased their spending overseas by 5 percent to 24.3 billion pounds. "These record figures show the continued strength of this important sector and the UK's global position as a must-visit destination".

But the rise of the staycation meant there was a two per cent drop in Brits going overseas during the same period, according to new figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS). Spending by visitors during this period hit a record £13.3 billion, up 9% on the same period a year ago.

The fall in the pound hit the number United Kingdom residents making visits overseas, which fell to 6.9 million, a 2% decrease when compared with July 2016. A total of 15.1 million overseas visits were recorded from European Union countries, the UK's largest visitor-generating region, representing a 4 per cent rise on the same period previous year.

Past year set a record for inbound tourism to Britain on visits and spend with 37.6 million visits, up 4% on 2015 with visitors spending £22.5 billion, up 2%.

Tourism is worth approximately £127bn annually to the United Kingdom economy.
