Legionnaire's disease found at Minn. senior living center

State and local health authorities say they're investigating two cases of Legionnaires' disease in residents at the SilverCreek on Main assisted living facility in Maple Grove. Both cases involved residents of Silver Creek, and both are recovering after the first person had symptoms August 22nd and the second September 12th.

"Available evidence indicates the source of the Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease, is most likely within the building water system, though an exact source must still be determined", said a statement from the Minnesota Department of Health. Silver Creek says the issue is confined to a small part of its property, and it's working with state health officials to take precautions to make sure the bacteria does not spread.

We are in the process of a full environmental assessment the potential sources with outside experts and public health officials.

A statement from the facility announced temporary precautions in an attempt to prevent further infections among the 220 residents - including closing pools, providing bottled water, and discouraging the use of showers. Our precautions are following the Center for Disease Control Guidelines.

The department says that the Maple Grove water supply meets water quality standards, and that the recommended protective measures apply only to SilverCreek's residents, employees and visitors. "Symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, chills, shortness of breath, loss of appetite and coughing", according to a release from MDH.

The bacteria can not spread from one person to another. "Legionnaires' disease is spread by inhaling the fine spray (aerosols) from water sources containing Legionella bacteria".

The most-recent Legionnaires' outbreak occurred in Hopkins in 2016, during which 23 people were sickened and one person died; the source of the disease was linked to a cooling tower at Citrus Systems, Inc.
