Students Protest James Comey at Howard University Convocation”

Former F.B.I. Director James Comey's speech Friday at Howard University's Convocation was interrupted with widespread protest by students as he took the podium.

Protesters in the bleachers, probably students, started singing "We shall not be moved", and chanted "I love being black" when it came his time to talk.

Comey greeted the response by standing quietly before asking the group to "hear him out".

After about 15 minutes, Comey began speaking over the demonstrators, saying he appreciated their enthusiasm but wanted to have a respectful conversation.

The university's president, Wayne A.I. Frederick, said in a statement that he hopes Comey's lectures will "go a long way in sparking rich discussion and advancing meaningful debates across campus". He led the FBI's investigation into both Hillary Clinton alleged mishandling of work-related emails as Secretary of State, and alleged collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and the Russian government.

In August, Howard announced that it was naming Comey the 2017-2018 Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King endowed chair in public policy and that he would speak at this year's convocation, formally welcoming the Class of 2021.

"Howard has a longstanding history of being a vibrant academic community and the flawless place to have rich dialogue on numerous most pressing issues we face today", Comey said in a statement in August. The fund will support students coming from a foster home environment.
