Trump Administration to Unveil Replacement for Controversial Travel Ban

Trump Administration to Unveil Replacement for Controversial Travel Ban”

President Donald Trump's travel ban, which expires Sunday, will be replaced by a series of targeted measures meant to deter the entry of terrorists to the United States. They could include a ban on travel to the United States, or new restrictions on obtaining a visa for citizens of particular countries.

Trump's administration has said the ban is critical to national security, while opponents have argued it violates the U.S. Constitution's religious protections. Though the White House has not finalized its plan, the new travel restrictions could apply to more than the six countries whose nationals' are now barred from entering the United States, but the restrictions could be loosened as well. These officials warned a number of foreign governments that they will severely restrict or suspend travel to the US unless they fully comply with the security regime.

The president's executive order requires the secretaries of state and homeland security and the director of national intelligence to produce reports identifying the additional security measures countries named in the order must implement in order to resume regular travel to the U.S. It appears this proposal is the result of that process.

Mr Trump still needs to approve the new plan, which appears to resemble what he had in mind earlier this month.

"The travel ban into the United States should be far larger, tougher and more specific", Trump wrote after a crude bomb exploded on a London Underground train on September 15. Iraq was later deemed to have improved its screening of potential travelers and was taken off the banned list. As legal challenges continued to block the implementation of the ban, the president signed a revised ban targeting the same countries, minus Iraq. To that effect, the administration is doing everything it can to ensure that it will be victorious in the upcoming Supreme Court hearings regarding the ban.

The changes to be announced this weekend could have a profound impact on the court case, complicating the review by the justices and potentially making parts of the case moot even before the oral arguments, which are scheduled for October 10. Officially, the White House redid the travel ban after its own review, and Trump tweeted his desire for "tougher" restrictions after the recent London Tube terror attack.

The justices are likely to seek new input from lawyers for the government and for the groups challenging the travel ban before arguments begin.
