As Puerto Ricans begin to clean up the damage caused by Hurricane Maria one local woman remembers her experience during one of the deadliest hurricanes to hit the island.

Maria is whipping up winds of up to 235km/h, and is expected to dump at least 66cm of rain in some parts.

11,000 people are now in shelters, and at least one person has been killed by storm-related causes.

The heavy rainfall may also pose a greater risk, as the island is prone to mudslides. "The puertorrican Cubs have united forces to help!" wrote Perez on the fundraiser, which is called Ayudando a Puerto Rico (or "Helping Puerto Rico").

By Tuesday night, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Maria's winds had intensified to 175 miles per hour (280 kph) and additional strengthening was possible. They said two other people were reported missing after their boat sank off La Desirade island, just east of Guadeloupe. "Puerto Rico needs us more than ever, that is why we have joined forces to help any way we can".

In the capital of San Juan, streets and beaches that were normally bustling with people were empty Tuesday, with only the occasional sound of a hammer pounding nails into plywood sheets interrupting the silence.

Hurricane center forecasters said it "now appears likely" that Maria will still be at Category 5 intensity when it moves over the U.S. Virgin Islands on Tuesday night and Puerto Rico on Wednesday, bringing with it "life-threatening" flooding from rain and storm surge. The majority of the island has lost power, in San Juan many are left without running water or cell phone service, and the Governor said Maria is the "most devastating storm to hit the island this century".

Iris Tosado, a 64-year-old widowed housewife, scanned the almost empty shelves before heading back home. "This is not looking good".

The Coast Guard - alongside the US and British Royal Navies - first launched a search for the vessel after receiving a distress call on Wednesday morning, while Maria was battering the area. Big waves caused by Jose swept five people off a coastal jetty in Rhode Island and they were hospitalized after being rescued.

Jose's center was about 255 miles (415 kilometers) east-northeast of Cape Hattaras, North Carolina, on Tuesday afternoon and moving north at 7 mph (11 kph). This year's Irma, which had 185 miles per hour (300 kph) winds, ranks second.
