Air Pollution Exposure & Kidney Disease Linked By New Study”

They concluded that the air pollution levels in certain geographic areas of the U.S. are particularly bad and that people living in them have an elevated risk of kidney disease. This is the case with the relationship between air pollution and many other diseases as well, so this isn't too surprising.

Researchers from Washington University pulled health data on more than 2.5 million people listed in Veterans Affairs databases for almost nine years beginning in 2004.

They compared data on kidney function to air-quality levels collected by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as Nasa.

Air pollution may increase the risk of getting a chronic kidney disease which eventually leads to kidney failure, a new study has shown.

And the researchers found that air pollution causes 44,793 new cases of kidney disease and 2,438 cases of kidney failure annually.

He said: 'Data on the relationship between air pollution and kidney disease in humans has been scarce.

They found that almost 45,000 new cases of kidney disease and almost 2,500 new cases of kidney failure could be linked to toxic air that contained levels of pollutants deemed potentially risky by the Clean Air Act established by the EPA.

The simplest explanation air pollution being responsible for kidney ailments would be that the airborne and invisible pieces of dust, dirt, smoke, soot and liquid droplets prove to be extremely hazardous when they invade the bloodstream.

It's noteworthy here, though, that even particulate air pollution levels below the EPA's recommended limits are apparently damaging to the kidneys.

'The higher the levels of air pollution, the worse it is for the kidneys. However, once we analyzed the data, the link between air pollution and the development of kidney disease was clear'.

"No level is completely safe", says Al-Aly. Still, the report found that 4 in 10 Americans lived in a community that was found to have unhealthy air quality.

FRIDAY, Sept. 22, 2017 (HealthDay News) - Air pollution may lead to kidney damage, according to a study published online Sept. 21 in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
