Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Shakes Mexico Coast Days After Deadly Quake

Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Shakes Mexico Coast Days After Deadly Quake”

The quake hit in a region of Mexico that was most shaken by an 8.1 magnitude natural disaster that hit earlier this month as well.

The US Geological Survey reported Saturday that a 5.8-magnitude quake occurred in waters off the Mexican coast.

The temblor occurred 123 kilometre to the southeast of Salina Cruz, which is located on Mexico's southern Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca, Efe news reported. Mexican quake monitors gave the same figure.

People in Mexico city reported feeling the swaying and believed it was an aftershock, but USGS has not reported any seismic activity in the area near Puebla, where a magnitude 7.1 natural disaster struck on Tuesday, killing 295 people.

It swayed buildings and set off a seismic alarm in the capital, promping civil defense officials to temporarily suspend rescue operations in the rubble of buildings downed by Thursday's magnitude 7.1 quake in central Mexico.

The quake was much weaker than the magnitude 7.1 natural disaster that hit on Tuesday, killing at least 295 people and knocking down buildings across the capital.

It came four days after a 7.1-magnitude natural disaster shook the country, claiming 292 lives.

"It feels lifeless", said Mariana Aguilar, 27, a hostess at a bar and restaurant who stood waiting for guests yet to arrive.

Along the bike lane, where families slept in tents, accepting food and coffee from strangers, people have organised to present a united front to authorities, who they pressed ceaselessly for information about their loved ones.

"There are moments when you feel like you're breaking down", Ms Fernandez said.

"I mean, it was pretty strong", Pascucci said.

Rescue operations are still under way to save those are feared trapped under rubble.

"It was big enough for us to know it was big", she said, but from what she saw not powerful enough to people over.
