Mauricio Pochettino: 'Trusting Eric Dier in midfield was a gamble'

Mauricio Pochettino: 'Trusting Eric Dier in midfield was a gamble'”

Mauricio Pochettino has rejected Tim Sherwood's claims that Harry Kane could walk out on Tottenham if they have another season without a trophy.

Former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood and six-time Premier League victor Phil Neville are among those to have suggested that Kane's future may lie away from the club, if Pochettino's men continue to fall short in their pursuit of success.

Asked about Dier's utility-man status, which saw him play 48 times for Spurs and a further eight times for England in 2016-17, Pochettino added: "If he in time shows he is great or one of the best in the world in one position, OK, that is fantastic for him".

"I think the feeling within the place was positive, we felt things were going in the right direction, and hopefully they will continue to, because we might have challenged a couple of times, but we haven't really done anything yet".

"Yeah, we always try to find the way to stay together out of the training ground because it is so different, all that happens is so different". But that is a question more for Harry and what he's going to do.

Pochettino has also taken the opportunity to further talk up Kane's talent, after seeing the back-to-back Premier League Golden Boot victor named as the only Englishman on the 55-man FIFPro World XI shortlist. He is one of the best strikers playing for Tottenham when still we don't win any trophies.

"He is a player who I have told you many, many times that, for me, he is one of the geniuses that I have met in football". This doesn't surprise me. "The only thing I have is the final decision when we sign or sell players".

"Wednesday we had a dinner in a restaurant in London with all the staff and players that I invite, of course".

Spurs FIFA 18 Player Ratings REVEALED including Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Lloris and more!

And after scoring the victor in Tuesday's 1-0 EFL Cup win over Barnsley, Alli was shown celebrating by cupping his ears, an act which some interpreted as a show of petulance towards demanding Spurs fans.

"It was a situation where he was referencing one fan in the stand", the Argentinian said. It was nothing related to us, the club or the fans. That is the truth and I believe it and yesterday he told me that. But as a group, I think we wouldn't be happy unless we won something.
