Some fearless soul volunteered for a completely robotic dental surgery”

China is facing a shortage of qualified dentists in its mainland, and this robotic surgeon is seen as a possible solution to the problem.

The procedure involved creating two false implantable teeth using 3D printing.

While there were humans on hand to observe the one hour operation, they weren't required to step in and assist the operation, meaning that the entire process was undertaken, from start to finish, by a metal robotic hand.

Robots can safely conduct dental surgeries like implantations with more accuracy and agility in a narrow space like the oral cavity, according to dental experts cited by the Science and Technology Daily.

An epidemiological survey has found there were about 400 million patients needing new teeth in China, but the number of qualified dentists was lagging behind demand.

Around one million implants are carried out across the country each year and the poor quality of the surgery that patients face can often cause further problems.

One benefit is being able to better maneuver in the small space in the patient's mouth; as well, humans have lower visibility and this can make the procedure hard.

Prior to the surgery, the robot was oriented to the patient's head and mouth and researchers then programmed the device with all of the necessary information for it to complete the procedure.

During the operation, the robot was able to make adjustments in line with the patient's own movements. Robots stand to increase service rates and complete operations with fewer errors. The robot also presents some benefits over human surgeons.
