Australians rage over marriage equality text message, Twitter responds hilariously”

But Ms Plibersek defended the text message campaign on Insiders this morning, saying it paled in comparison to some techniques being used by the "no" campaign.

"We're all pretty active on social media and we've seen some negative stuff thrown around there but I think it's very different when you're face to face with someone, they're less inclined to be so upfront", Mr Dempsey told AAP.

Thousands of same-sex marriage supporters have door-knocked around the country, encouraging Australians to post their votes.

Tens of thousands of marriage equality supporters kicked off a text message and doorknocking campaign this weekend encouraging people to vote "yes" in the same-sex marriage postal survey.

The campaign took a new turn after many Australians received a text message on Saturday calling on them to vote "Yes" in the postal survey.

"The campaign has a responsibility to encourage every Australian to post their survey and we have done this through door knocking, media, advertising, social media and SMS messaging".

Ms Plibersek said she was nervous about the outcome of the debate and said the biggest threat to the Yes campaign was people assuming it would succeed.

"This is about people that we know", he said.

"When the yes campaign actually goes out and campaigns, like it would in a general election, the no campaign says, "Oh, its really unfair that people are urging a yes vote".

Alex Greenwich from the Marriage Equality campaign told News Corp Australia that they're now using every resource possible to urge people to vote yes.

Abbott went on air on Friday after he was allegedly head-butted in Hobart, claiming his alleged assailant was a marriage equality advocate.

Another said: 'I did vote yes but how dare you send me a text to my phone. He said he was wearing a rainbow yes badge when the alleged attack occurred but has repeatedly stated he is not a campaigner and said "this has nothing whatsoever to do with marriage equality".

One person said they had voted "yes" but still had concerns about privacy.

"There's no rhyme or reason in terms of who was targeted or what", he said.

"The message for those who are campaigning for yes is to make this about people's right to marry and make this about acceptance".

Organised by a group of self-described patriots, one of the speakers urged people to push back against the "sick and vile homosexual agenda" in Australian schools and universities. The result will be announced on 15 November.
